How You Can Help Finally Defeat the Republicans By Doing This One Thing
No. I’m not going to tell you to vote.
You should. But voting won’t change things.
That’s because the levers of power in America are controlled by Christofascists and intentionally ineffectual corporate Democrats and Republicans
(Hi. Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema. Hello also, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.)
The good news is that we, you and I, can fix this.
The bad news is that, while there are things we can, and should, do right now, we also need to plan for the long term.
That’s what the Republicans did with Roe v. Wade.
They organized, they set a goal, they pooled their money, and they did everything in their power to overturn it.
That’s because they knew that if they were focused and consistent, eventually they would win. Time was irrelevant to them.
And that’s a key lesson that we can’t ignore.
Because we need to start applying those same tactics to the issues we care about in order to fight back.
So, What Can You do?
There are many challenges we face. You don’t need me to name them. I’m sure about a dozen spring to mind.
And that’s the point.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by one crisis after another, you’re more likely to shut down and not want to deal with anything or even vote. And a lot of people don’t vote for this EXACT reason.
And so the Republicans deliberately “flood the zone”, just inundating you with bullshit, because they know this strategy works.
The only way to stop them is to first acknowledge what Carl Sagan said, in that, not everyone lives long enough to see the big picture. We can only catch glimpses of it.
So, the action you begin to take?
You may never see victory. And that’s ok.
The point is to keep pushing and building momentum so that change comes as quickly as possible for as many people as possible, regardless of whether or not you live to see it.
With that said, it’s also impossible to fight and win on multiple fronts at the same time.
People are terrible multitaskers. This is a fact.
So, the thing you can do is pick one of the issues we face.
Just one.
If you can do more? Great! But most people can’t.
We all live within a system that is intentionally designed to keep you tired, overworked, stressed, or at the very least, distracted so that the Christofacist project of the Republican party can continue uninterrupted.
Once you’ve found your one issue, you then have to find an aspect of that issue that’s concrete and specific. You can’t take on all of it.
You need to find something that you can work on as you have the time and money to do so.
Here’s an example:
“Voting Rights” is too big for one person to take on. We need to act collectively to fix that.
But how can you help now and into the future?
Find something specific, measurable, and concrete to address, something that touches on one aspect of the Voting Rights challenge ahead of us.
In my case, I am supporting efforts to allow for no excuse, universal mail-in balloting for New York State.
If I am successful in making this happen, that will improve ballot access for one of America’s largest states, and create momentum for other states to follow suit.
And it’s momentum, sustained over a long period of time, that leads to change.
Everyone thinks history just sort of happens. And in the 21st Century, we’ve had a lot of examples to support this including Bush stealing an election, 9/11, The Great Recession (which was really a Depression), and COVID-19.
But history actually changes with hundreds of incremental steps that you never really see or hear about. It’s all happening in the margins.
If each of us dedicates ourselves to successfully completing an incremental step over the course of our lifetime, that will generate and sustain the momentum needed to build a new, more equitable, America for everyone.
It takes each of us, to work with a dedicated purpose, on different aspects of the larger challenge, that will lead to sustainable change.
So find something. Anything you’d like, within the greater challenges we face, and dedicate yourself to working on that one thing.
It will mean all the difference, to you in finding some extra sense of fulfillment, for your friends and neighbors, and for generations to come.
