Your One Small Step

Last week, I (hopefully) stressed how important it is to get to know your audience on a deep level. This week, I’m going to tell you why.

There are just over five billion people using the Internet right now.

All of them ask the same three questions:

  1. Where’s the porn?
  2. Where’s the porn?
  3. Where’s the porn?

No. Wait. That’s not what they ask. They ask:

  1. What’s in it for me?
  2. What are the three biggest problems I’m trying to solve, right now.
  3. How will doing this thing (buying your thing, for example) make you look among your peers?

That second question is very specific to YouTube and Google, since people primarily use those things to solve a problem.

If you talk to your customers, you’ll be able to answer that second question easily. (You are talking to your customers, right? You have to make time every week to do that.)

That first and third questions are trickier. They are also the questions you need a GREAT answer to.

So try to answer them.

What’s in it for someone if they watch your show / read your book / buy your product?

How are their peers going to think of them if they do buy / read / watch?

I know. This stuff always sounds so simplistic.

Annoyingly so.

But those three questions are the key to understanding everyone on the Internet and how they use it.
